What the meanig of «Total Acid Number (TAN)»?


(TAN) characterizes the acidic environment of the oil measured in mg KOH, which are required to neutralize the acidic components in one gram of oil. The indicator is used to assess the degree of additive depletion, acid pollution and oil oxidation. In fresh oils, the acid number is always present due to additives. Typical acid values for new engine oils range from 1.5 to 2.0 mgKOH/g.
