ACEA classification of engine oils for heavy-duty diesel engines

The Association of European Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA – Association des Constructeurs Europeens de L’Automobile) provides a detailed description of the service test sequence for gasoline and diesel engines. This sequence defines the quality level of engine oils for heavy-duty commercial vehicle diesel engines.

ACEA engine oil categories for heavy-duty diesel engines (E)

Category Service
Е4 All-season oils with improved stability remain in their viscosity class. Oils provide excellent piston cleanliness control, quality lubrication, reduced piston wear, reduce soot formation. Recommended for high-performance diesel engines that meet the requirements of Euro I, Euro II, Euro III, Euro III, Euro IV and Euro V emissions standards. Oils can operate in harsh conditions, for example with significantly longer oil change intervals (according to the manufacturer’s recommendations). The oils are suitable for diesel engines without diesel particulate filters (DPF), for some models with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and also for some engines with selective catalytic reduction system (SCR NOx). Recommendations of different engine manufacturers may vary, so if in doubt, consult the vehicle owner’s manual and/or your dealer.
Е6 All-season oils with improved stability in their viscosity grade. Oils provide excellent piston cleanliness control, quality lubrication, reduced piston wear and reduce soot formation. Recommended for high-performance diesel engines that meet the standards of Euro I, Euro II, Euro III, Euro III, Euro IV, Euro V and Euro VІІ emissions standards. Oils can operate under harsh conditions, for example, significantly longer oil drain intervals (according to the manufacturer’s recommendations), designed for Euro VІ ecological class with increased emission requirements. The oils are suitable for diesel engines operating with and without diesel particulate filters (DPF), for some models with the exhaust gas recirculation system (EGR), as well as for some engines with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR NOx). Oils in this class are recommended for engines equipped with diesel particulate filters (DPF) and designed to operate on low-sulfur diesel fuels. Recommendations may vary from engine manufacturer to engine manufacturer, so if in doubt, consult the vehicle owner’s manual and/or your dealer.
E8 All-season oils that have improved stability in their viscosity class, provide excellent piston cleanliness control, wear protection, help reduce soot formation and have stable lubricating properties. They are recommended for high-performance diesel engines that meet the Euro I, Euro II, Euro III, Euro IV, Euro V and Euro VI emission requirements and operate under very severe conditions, such as significantly extended drain intervals in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. They are suitable for EGR engines, engines with or without particulate filters and engines with NOx reduction systems (SCR). These oils are recommended for engines fitted with diesel particulate filters (DPF) and are designed to operate on low-sulfur diesel fuels. Recommendations may vary from engine manufacturer to engine manufacturer, so if in doubt, refer to your vehicle owner’s manual and/or consult your dealer.
Е7 All-season oils with improved stability remain in their viscosity class. Oils provide excellent piston cleanliness control, quality lubrication, reduced piston wear, help reduce soot formation, prevent polishing of the cylinder surface. Recommended for high-performance diesel engines that meet the standards of Euro I, Euro II, Euro III, Euro III, Euro IV and Euro V emissions standards. Oils can operate in harsh conditions, for example with significantly longer oil change intervals (according to the manufacturer’s recommendations). The oils are suitable for diesel engines without diesel particulate filters (DPF) and for some models with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and also for some engines with selective catalytic reduction system (SCR NOx). Recommendations of different engine manufacturers may vary; if in doubt, consult the vehicle owner’s manual and/or your dealer.
Е9 All-season oils with improved stability in their viscosity grade. Oils provide excellent piston cleanliness control, quality lubrication, reduced piston wear, reduce soot formation, prevent polishing of the cylinder surface. Recommended for high-performance diesel engines that meet the standards of Euro I, Euro II, Euro III, Euro III, Euro IV, Euro V and Euro VI. Oils can operate in harsh conditions, for example with significantly longer oil drain intervals (according to the manufacturer’s recommendations), designed for Euro VІ ecological class with increased emissions requirements. The oils are suitable for diesel engines operating with and without diesel particulate filters (DPF) and for some models with EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) and also for some engines with SCR NOx (selective catalytic reduction). E9 oils are recommended for engines equipped with diesel particulate filters (DPFs) and designed to operate on low-sulfur diesel fuels. Recommendations may differ from engine manufacturer’s recommendations, so consult engine manufacturer’s manual or dealer.
Е11 All-season oils that have increased stability to stay in their viscosity class. Oils provide excellent piston cleanliness control, quality lubrication, reduced piston wear, reduce soot formation, prevent polishing of the cylinder surface. Recommended for high-performance diesel engines that meet the standards of Euro I, Euro II, Euro III, Euro III, Euro IV, Euro V and Euro VI. These oils can be used under severe conditions, for example when the oil change intervals are significantly extended (according to the manufacturer’s recommendations). The oils are suitable for diesel engines operating with and without diesel particulate filters (DPF), for most EGR models and also for most SCR NOx engines. ACЕA E11 oils are recommended for engines equipped with diesel particulate filters (DPFs) and designed to operate on low-sulfur diesel fuels. Recommendations may differ from those suggested by the engine manufacturer, so consult the manual or your dealer.
