API grades of engine oils for diesel engines

API C (Commercial) diesel engine oils for trucks, buses and equipment

Here is current and previous API (American Petroleum Institute) service categories for truck diesel engines. Current and previous API service categories are summarized in easy-to-read charts. Vehicle owners should consult their owner’s manuals before reviewing these charts. Oils may have more than one performance level. For diesel engines, the last category usually – but not always – includes the performance characteristics of the previous category.

API FA-4 and FA-4 Donut identify certain SAE XW-30 oils specifically designed for use in certain high-speed four-stroke diesel engines as of the 2017 model year, designed to meet greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions standards. API FA-4 oils are not interchangeable or backward compatible with API CK-4, CJ-4, CI-4 PLUS, CI-4 and CH-4 oils. Consult your engine manufacturer’s recommendations to determine if API FA-4 oils are suitable for use in your vehicle.

Diesel engine oil classification (c)

Категорія Статус Сервіс
СК-4 Valid API service category CK-4 describes oils for use in high-speed four-stroke diesel engines that are designed to meet the 2017 emission standards for 4-stroke on-road and off-road diesel engines, as well as for diesel engines of the previous year of manufacture. These oils are designed to work with diesel fuels with sulfur content up to 500 ppm (0.05% by weight). However, the use of these oils with a sulfur content of more than 15 ppm (0.0015% by weight) may affect the durability of the exhaust gas aftertreatment system and/or the oil drain interval. These oils are particularly effective in maintaining emission control system longevity when particulate filters and other advanced aftertreatment systems are used. API CK-4 oils have enhanced protection against oxidation, loss of viscosity due to shear and aeration. They protect catalytic converters from poisoning, particulate filters from blocking, engines from wear, piston deposits, low and high-temperature deterioration. API CK-4 oils exceed the performance criteria of API CJ-4, CI-4 with CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, and CH-4 oils and can effectively lubricate engines requiring these API service categories. When using API CK-4 oil with fuels containing more than 15 ppm sulfur, engine manufacturer’s recommendations should be obtained.
СJ-4 Valid For high-speed four-stroke diesel engines that are designed to meet the 2010 emission standards for 4-stroke engines in on-road and off-road vehicles, as well as for diesel engines of the previous model range. These oils are designed for use with diesel fuels with sulfur content up to 500 ppm (0.05% by weight). However, the use of these oils with a sulfur content greater than 15 ppm (0.0015% by weight) may affect the durability of the exhaust aftertreatment system and/or the oil drain interval. API CJ-4 oils exceed the API CI-4 performance criteria with CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, CH-4, CG-4 and CF-4 and can effectively lubricate engines where those API categories are prescribed. When using API CJ-4 oil with fuels containing more than 15 ppm sulfur, contact your engine manufacturer.
CI-4 Valid Introduced in 2002. For high-speed four-stroke engines designed to meet the 2004 emission standards introduced in 2002. Oils are designed to use diesel fuel with sulfur content up to 0.5% by weight. Can be used instead of CD, CE, CF-4, CG-4 and CH-4 oils. Some CI-4 oils may also qualify for CI-4 PLUS classification.
СН-4 Valid Introduced in 1998. For high-speed four-stroke engines designed to meet the 1998 emission standards. CH-4 oils are specifically designed for use with diesel fuels with sulfur content up to 0.5% by weight. It can be used instead of CD, CE, CF-4 and CG-4 oils.
CG-4 Old CAUTION: Not suitable for use in most diesel engines developed after 2009.
CF-4 Old CAUTION: Not suitable for use in most diesel engines developed after 2009.
CF-2 Old CAUTION: Not suitable for use in most diesel engines developed after 2009. Two-stroke engines may have different lubrication requirements than four-stroke engines, so lubrication recommendations should be obtained.
CF Old CAUTION: Not suitable for use in most diesel engines developed after 2009. More recently developed “C” category diesel oils replace those for which “CF” was specified. Older equipment and/or two-stroke diesel engines, especially those requiring seasonal oils, may use “CF” category oils.
СЕ Old CAUTION: Not suitable for use in most diesel engines developed after 1994.
CD-II Old CAUTION: Not suitable for use in most diesel engines developed after 1994.
CD Old CAUTION: Not suitable for use in most diesel engines developed after 1994.
CC Old CAUTION: Not suitable for use in most diesel engines developed after 1990.
CB Old CAUTION: Not suitable for use in most automotive diesel engines developed after 1961.
CA Old CAUTION: Not suitable for use in most diesel engines developed after 1959.

Classification of Engine Oils For Diesel Engines of Category FA-4

Category Status Service
FA-4 Valid The API FA-4 service category describes XW-30 oils that are specifically designed for use in high-speed four-stroke diesel engines and are designed to meet 2017 greenhouse gas emissions standards. These oils are designed for on-road use with diesel fuels containing up to 15 ppm sulfur (0.0015% by weight). Engine manufacturer recommendations regarding compatibility with API FA-4 oils should be obtained. These oils have a high temperature, high shear rate (HTHS) viscosity in the 2.9 cP-3.2cP (mPa-s) range, which helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These oils are especially effective in maintaining emission control system longevity when particulate filters and other advanced aftertreatment systems are used. API FA-4 oils offer increased protection against oil oxidation, loss of viscosity due to shear and aeration, protect catalytic converters from poisoning, soot filters from blocking, engine wear, piston deposits, low- and high-temperature deterioration, and increased viscosity due to soot formation. API FA-4 oils are not interchangeable or backward compatible with API CK-4, CJ-4, CI-4, CI-4 PLUS, and CH-4 oils. Engine manufacturer recommendations must be obtained to determine if API FA-4 oils are suitable for use. API FA-4 oils are not recommended for use with fuels having more than 15 ppm. To use fuels with a sulfur content greater than 15 ppm, refer to the engine manufacturer’s recommendations.
