ILSAC standards of engine oils for passenger cars

ILSAC Standards for passenger car motor oils

Current and previous ILSAC (International Lubricant Specification Advisory Committee) standards are listed here. Vehicle owners should consult their owner’s manuals before reviewing these tables. Oils may have more than one performance level.

For automotive gasoline engines, the latest ILSAC standard includes the performance characteristics of each previous category and can be used to service older engines where oils from previous categories are recommended.

Сlassification of motor oils for gasoline engines

Category Status Service
GF-6A Valid Introduced in May 2020, designed to provide protection against low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI), timing chain wear protection, improved protection against high-temperature deposits on pistons and turbochargers, stricter control of sludge and varnish formation, improved fuel economy, improved emission control system protection, emission control system protection and protection for engines using ethanol-containing fuels up to E85.
GF-6B Valid Applies only to oils with viscosity grade SAE 0W-16. Introduced in May 2020, designed to provide protection against low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI), timing chain wear protection, improved protection against high-temperature deposits on pistons and turbochargers, stricter control of sludge and varnish formation, improved fuel economy, improved emission control system protection, emission control system protection and protection for engines using ethanol-containing fuels up to E85.
GF-5 Old* Use GF-6A where GF-5 is recommended.
GF-4 Old Use GF-5 where GF-4 is recommended..
GF-3 Old Use GF-5 where GF-3 is recommended.
GF-2 Old Use GF-5 where GF-2 is recommended.
