JASO grades of engine oils for diesel engines

JASO Diesel engine oil performance classifications

These specifications were developed by the Japanese Automotive Standard Organization (JASO) and refer to engine oils for four-stroke diesel trucks and cars. According to JASO standard M 355: 2017, engine oils are classified as follows:

JASO Diesel engine oil classification

Specification Description
DH-1 Oils with high sulfated ash content (full SAPS) for heavy diesel engines. These oils are suitable for engines using fuels with a sulfur content of more than 0.05%. Not suitable for engines equipped with exhaust aftertreatment devices.
DH2 Oils with reduced sulfated ash content (mid SAPS) intended for heavy-duty diesel engines, especially if they are equipped with exhaust aftertreatment devices. These oils are suitable for engines that use fuels with a sulfur content not exceeding 0.005%.
DH-2F Energy-saving engine oils with reduced sulfated ash content (mid SAPS) for heavy-duty diesel engines. The oils are suitable for engines that use fuels with a sulfur content not exceeding 0.005%.
DL-0 Oils with a high sulfated ash content (full SAPS), intended for lightweight diesel engines. An alternative to the use of oils API CF-4 in light diesel engines. These oils are suitable for engines that use fuels with a sulfur content of more than 0.05%.
DL-1 Energy-saving low-friction SAE xW-30, xW-20 oils with low sulphated ash content (low SAPS). Specially designed for light duty diesel engines equipped with exhaust aftertreatment devices. Oils are suitable for engines using fuels with a sulfur content not exceeding 0.005%.
