Oil change intervals for engines in modern commercial vehicles

Modern car manufacturers, both European and global, are focused on the latest requirements for lubricants for diesel engines in commercial vehicles. The purpose of these requirements is to improve engine efficiency, increase fuel economy, improve the environmental performance of the engine, protect engine components responsible for exhaust gas cleaning, and extend oil change intervals.

The main factors regarding oil change intervals are the vehicle manufacturer’s requirements based on the vehicle’s operating conditions, in particular: fuel quality, the terrain where the vehicle is operated, the season of the year, the vehicle load and its technical condition, driving style and many other factors.

For example, the leading car manufacturer MAN recommends the following possible oil change intervals for its TGX Euro 6 series: at low load with fuel consumption up to 30 liters per 100 km – 80,000 km of mileage, at medium load with fuel consumption 30-50 liters per 100 km – 55,000 km of mileage and at heavy duty with fuel consumption more than 50 liters per 100 km – 30,000 km of mileage. These intervals are indicative and may vary depending on changes in the operating conditions of the vehicle.

The most accurate method of determining the optimal oil change interval is to conduct operational monitoring of oil operation, with periodic sampling of working oils at the specified intervals and analysis of these samples in specialized laboratories for a special set of parameters, which makes it possible to determine the condition of the oil and the possibility of its further operation.
